The new Bossie was unveiled at the All Dons Reunion on October 1, 2022 (Noozhawk article). She will live on campus. Talli Richards Versola (1982) wrote and read the following poem. For Bossie 1939-2020 This here’s the story, of a cow we all know, It really began, quite a long time ago. A sculptor named Kuhn and a milkman named Clifford, Gave her a start, though the spelling has differed. Our beautiful girl, Old Bossy to many, She had many friends, especially Jenny. The building’s a landmark, as of course it should be, At Nine-oh-one Milpas, was the Live Oak Dair-y. The names on the building, they changed through the years, There was Petan, and Arden, then McConnells, 3 cheers! The McCoys played a part, they rescued the cow, Put her back up on top, more than once, just wow. The Dons, they have painted, adorned her at times, Twas all in good fun, not considered a crime. Our rivals joined in, it was somewhat expected, If colors were changed, they soon were corrected. The morning she fell, the rumors they spread, It must be San Marcos, is what people said, But No!, it was natural, her leg, it gave out. There’s no one to blame, and there isn’t a doubt. She had layers of paint, and it all added weight, Old Bossie was tired, she accepted her fate. She was yellow and gold, she was olive and green, One thing is certain, she’s forever our queen. People and places, they came and they went, And Bossie, she lasted, her feet on cement, But like all the good things, she came to an end, She broke into pieces, too many to mend. Old Bossy was special, so rich in tradition, We all tried so hard, it was like a petition. So many donors, who came to her rescue We know all your names, seriously, Bless You! Alas, in the end, we sit here defeated, Where she once stood, will not be repeated. So for now, my friends, there is no possibility, It keeps coming back to that damn liability. This will be different, our new cow lives here, On campus to guide us, all through the year. So today, meet New Bossie, she’s young, and she’s strong! She’s just getting started, her reign will be long.
Bossie Donors
The Santa Barbara High School Alumni Association sincerely thanks the following alumni donors who started a grass-roots movement to replace Bossie. We also wish to thank Dori and Bruce Koehler ‘81 who started a Go Fund Me page which gathered donations from the community. Together these two funds have enabled the Alumni Association to purchase a new cow for many Dons generations to come. “The Cow” tradition now lives on campus! 1953 John Campilio, Maureen MacQuiddy Masson 1954 Kay Saruwatari Van Horn 1956 Jody Nigh 1958 Susan Ramsdell Richards 1959 Pamela Campbell Romani, Jesse Ponce, Ron Smith 1960 William Cordero 1961 Yolanda Borrayo, Diana Prola Washburn 1962 Alison Franks 1963 Don Mee 1964 James Callis, William Lannan, Roxanne Parks Garrett 1965 Dennis Hartman, Susie Hopkins Murray, Joan Lipke Pylman 1966 Carol Bond-Barney & Mark Barney, Victor Bartolomé, Susan Cowing Brady, Helen Tanner Cooney 1967 Jeanette Arnoldi, Jeanne Mitchell Fivash, Kathryn Rairden, JoAnn Tabata Torigoe 1968 Teresa Findley 1969 Merrilee Ford, Tim Gilles, Jeff Kinsell, Sally Thompson Nespor, Betsy Matthew Turner, Sue Carol Taylor Newman 1970 Sandy Buchanan Johnson, Frank Fragosa, George Whiteman 1971 Carol Crown Schmitter, Vivian Lasserre Helfrich, Andrea Lopez, Elizabeth McCloskey, Christopher Olsen, Ione Robinson Green, Timothy Simonds, Stephen Stanczyk 1972 The Class of 1972, Colleen Bloch Dennis, Carolyn Blount, Gloria Cavallero, Cathy Christensen Pound, Marnel Kitchin Mata, Cathy Mero Doherty, David Ortiz, Leslie Rian Ortiz, Rita Rodgers Stribling, Geoffrey Rosenberger, Cozi Williams Ferree, Christy Winkler Moore 1973 Ann Campbell Simonds, Kim Lathim Lippencott, Susan Maurer Katnic, Kim Muller, Patricia Olivera Tagles, Patti Suzuki Boucher, Valerie Viscarra Logan, Lee Wardlaw Jaffurs 1974 Nancy Aylesworth White, Jan Brooks, Jane Harrington, Stephen Karczag, Debra Patterson, Priscilla Rodriguez Nomeland 1975 Steve Burr, Jennifer MacMillan, Donna Spencer 1976 Rod Lathim, Teresa Leon, Wanda Thomas 1977 Martha Carey Lee, Gayle Millard, Susan Suzuki 1978 Molly Kellogg, Craig Moropoulos 1979 Erin Busby, Eileen Kahre, Bonnie Keinath, Susan Renshaw Dawson 1980 Gail Badillo, Joe Lyons 1981 Bruce Koehler 1982 Kathleen Wilhoite 1983 Joanna Coss Miller, Kevin Hillyer, Veronica Uellner DeCoster 1988 Elizabeth Bernstein Reiter, Kelly Bret Almeroth, Maria Rocha 1990 Dennis Tivey 1992 Dani Cortez, Melissa Huber 1994 Kristine A.
